Easy Homemade Ice Cream Recipe : Chocolate

One of the benefits of having an ice cream maker is that you can make ice cream cheaply. Good quality store-bought ice cream is expensive, especially the premium brands. Personally I’m not going to waste the good stuff on the kids who aren’t going to taste the difference!

Here’s my recipe for chocolate ice cream that uses only five ingredients and is easy to make. It doesn’t taste too bad considering it doesn’t contain any chocolate, only cocoa powder.

This recipe is perfect for feeding to the kids when they want a treat for dessert during the week.

Instructions
  1. Combine milk and cream and heat slowly in a saucepan until bubbles appear around the edge.
  2. In a separate bowl combine egg yolks, sugar and cocoa with a bit of the warmed milk and cream to form a paste.
  3. Add the rest of the warmed milk and in parts cream and whisk together to combine.
  4. Cook over medium heat for 8-10 minutes. Don't let the mixture get over 167°F (75°C) or it will curdle.
  5. Allow mixture to cool in the fridge or an ice bath and then churn in ice cream maker.
Recipe Notes

You can step up the flavor a bit without increasing the cost by using a more expensive cocoa powder.
